Recorded in Malibu’s Shangri-La Studios, as well as Nashville, Mar Vista, and the band’s hometown of Concord, NC, The Avett Brothers is a collection of songs seen through a lens of independently studied spirituality; questions and considerations in the interest of the divine unknowable. ⠀⠀In an ongoing attempt to comprehend existence and our interpersonal connectedness, these songs seek the sacred in the commonplace: a cheap cup of coffee, the smallest movement of love, broken hearts and school bus lessons, a baby’s first and second steps, growing older and holding on to one’s roots, losing someone and accepting fate, rediscovering hope and finding sanctity in tragedy...ultimately reveling in the fun and surrender of what we cannot understand.

**Asia Society of Houston presents** NO NO BOY - IN-STORE PERFORMANCE

Cactus Music and the Asia Society of Houston are proud to present No-No Boy Saturday, 5/11/24 @ 1:00 PM.

. No-No Boy is an immersive concert experience thatilluminates hidden Asian American histories through folk songs, sound pieces, live projections, and storytelling. NPR Music has hailed it as "one of themost insurgent pieces of music you'll ever hear which re-examines americanawith devastating effect... An act of revisionist subversion" Takinginspiration from his own family’s history living through the Vietnam War aswell as many other stories of Asian American experience, Nashville-born songwriterand scholar Julian Saporiti has transformed his years of doctoral study into aninnovative project that bridges a divide between art and scholarship. Thisperformance will celebrate No-No Boy's third full-length LP EMPIRE ELECTRICreleased by the Smithsonian Folkways label.

Sounds contain histories and prophecies. If youlisten closely, there are winding tales to be found in a string brushed by ahandmade bow, worlds to be uncovered in the trill of a bird about to takeflight, and truths to be reckoned with in the grain of an unknown voice. Thisis the revelation at the core of EmpireElectric, the third album by No-No Boy, and its songs that examinenarratives of imperialism, identity, and spirituality. It tells stories rootedin years of research and relationship-building, made vibrant and profoundthrough a rich congregation of instrumental, environmental, and electronicallymanipulated sounds from Asia and America. Every single sound, from the graciousswell of a pedal steel to the warbling pluck of a koto, becomes a part of thepoetic recasting of shared post-colonial trauma and the startling joys that canbe wrung out of that hardship.

CACTUS FLOWERS - IN-STORE PERFORMANCE

Among the latest to emerge from a Texas psych-rock tradition that goes back more than fifty years, Houston’s Cactus Flowers announce the release of their sophomore full-length Elation with leadoff single “Dead Moon Rising.”

Once again, frontwoman/bandleader Jessica A.M. channels the power of a live volcano through her guitar rig, her tone pouring through your speakers like scorching lava. Meanwhile, her mystical lyrics convey a dreamlike, starry-eyed romanticism spiked with a bite of attitude. Raised by a mom who photographed bands for Rolling Stone during the magazine’s counter-culture heyday, Jessica was, believe it or not, a late bloomer when it came to playing rock music. Originally, her path seemed to point in the direction of her formal violin training.

But once she discovered the electric guitar in college, the die was cast. And when she met drummer and musical soulmate Mark Carcamo, a chemical reaction catalyzed, giving rise to Cactus Flowers’s intoxicating cocktail of psychedelia, fuzz, doom and classic rock. “It took me like 7 or 8 years to craft my sound,” Jessica explains. But once it clicked, there was no turning back.

Recorded by Grammy-winning producer Steve Christensen (Khruangbin, Steve Earle), Elation is a super-charged, almost monolithic realization of the band’s vision, which now includes bassist John Griffith (who produced the band’s debut full-length, 2019’s Incantations). Fittingly enough, the band wrote the bulk of Elation on numerous desert drives from Texas to the West Coast. Taken together, the songs take the listener on a fuzz-soaked musical journey of inner self discovery.

SOUTHALL - IN-STORE PERFORMANCE

Read Southall can sure turn a phrase. “This record is the gasoline for the love machine,” he says of his band’s new album, the exhilarating and self-titled Southall. The proud Oklahoma workingman isn’t exaggerating. The record sparks and burns with 11 crank-it-up songs that expertly combine country, rock & roll, and the dust and grit of the band’s native Red Dirt scene.

Thank you – Let the good times roll.

Gary Floyd, the multiformat artist who helped define the Austin punk scene as the outspoken frontman of rowdy punks the Dicks, has died at 71. He was taken off life support after a stay in the hospital with congestive heart failure.⠀ ⠀ Floyd grew up in Palestine, Texas and spent two years in Houston – where Floyd, a conscientious objector, worked as a janitor at a state hospital in order to avoid the draft – before he moved to Austin in 1974. By 1980, he, bassist Buxf Parrott, drummer Pat Deason, and guitarist Glen Taylor had formed the Dicks.⠀ ⠀ Perusing the titles on definitive compilation album Dicks 1980-1986 – “Anti-Klan (Part 1), “No Nazi’s Friend,” “No Fuckin’ War,” “I Hope You Get Drafted” – you get a sense of the band’s Reagan-era politics. Most aggressively upfront was Floyd himself, a fat, openly gay man who often wore drag while performing to Eighties Texas crowds. “Dicks Hate the Police,” a brutality satire often covered by Mudhoney back in the day, might be the band’s calling card, but “Saturday Night at the Bookstore,” an atonal tale of gloryholes and self-hating closeted men, best depicts Floyd’s blunt style.⠀ ⠀ Floyd moved to San Francisco in 1982 and, after the Dicks disbanded in 1986, led a number of other projects. More than a screamer, the vocalist showed off his singing chops in alternative blues ensemble Sister Double Happiness, which toured with Nirvana and Soundgarden in the Year Punk Broke. Aughts band Black Kali Ma followed, blending the styles of his previous projects.⠀ ⠀ Outside of music, Floyd wrote books – including the 2014 mini-autobiography Please Bee Nice: My Life up ’til Now and 2017 Dicks lyric book I Said That – and made visual art. In 2022, he debuted his last Austin art show, Maybe We’ll See Butterflies, at Prizer Arts & Letters. Issues with diabetes and congenital heart failure, plus a fall the artist suffered during the pandemic, kept Floyd from returning to Austin for the opening.
