Carlos Hernandez’s Day of The Dead Rock Stars 2015 – Saturday, 10/17 @ 6:00p.m.

HOUSTON, TEXAS…Carlos Hernandez and the Record Ranch Gallery (located inside Cactus Music) will present Day of the Dead Rock Stars: Dead Souls show in Houston from October 17 through January 2016.

This unique exhibit will memorialize deceased recording artists from rock, country, jazz and blues in honor of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. An artist’s reception, which is open to the public, will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, October 17 at Record Ranch Gallery (2110 Portsmouth). Saint Arnold Brewing Company will provide plenty of Santo, while the evening will also include live music and DJ Cavemanarchitect spinning records in the Record Ranch Gallery.

The 2015 Day of the Dead Rock Stars show will feature participating artists from across Texas, including Katy Seals, Tom Huck, The Amazing Hancock Brothers, Casey McGarr, Sean Starwars, and Christopher Wallace, among others, in addition to Hernandez. Highlighted musical artists this year will include Jimi Hendrix, Barry White, Ernest Tubb, Link Wray, Jerry Garcia and more.

Hernandez launched his “Day of the Dead Rock Stars” show in 2007 as a way to merge his love of
music and Day of the Dead culture. Over the years, he has seen the show evolve and the techniques
he uses to create the art – from canvas paintings to screen prints.

Celebrated throughout Mexico and the Southwest states, Día de los Muertos coincides with the
Christian All Saints (November 1) and All Souls Days (November 2). On these two days, elaborate Día de los Muertos altars with photos and memorabilia are created in honor of the deceased.

Opened in 2007, the Record Ranch Gallery showcases local and national artists whose art features a
music edge. In addition to Hernandez, previous shows have included works by Tim Easton, Stephanie
Alexander, Steve Harris, and Will Johnson, among others.

Cactus Music, the Bayou City’s premier music store, re-opened in a new storefront in November 2007 to the delight of Houston’s music fans. The new 5,800 square foot location at 2110 Portsmouth and S. Shepherd continues a 30-year history of offering an extensive selection of recorded music, hard-to-find DVDs and music-related gifts and products. Cactus Music also showcases local, regional and national talent on its stage with weekly in-store performances. Located inside the new Cactus Music is The Record Ranch, an 1,800 square-foot store and art gallery offering a unique shopping experience for vinyl customers. In addition to thousands of new and used records, The Record Ranch Gallery presents exhibits featuring music-related artwork.
